Daring to Dream

April 22, 2010

Everywhere I go I meet women over 50 who are making significant changes in their thinking and their lives.  They have found a sense of freedom and purpose and are running with it. By letting go of their past expectations they are able to grab onto the future with a very different kind of enthusiasm, one born of wisdom and experience.  I know the feeling and it’s amazing.

Just about the time my kids went off to college I too began to realize that I needed and wanted to make significant changes in my life. What I had done up until that point had been pretty much all about meeting the needs of my family. I had spent most of my life in hyper-put-everyone-else-first mode – you know the one that seems to take over the psyche of most mothers and females in general. I believe it’s hardwired into our DNA.  It does serve a purpose during the childbearing years, but beyond that? Forget it!  Boomer women who chose the career track are telling me that they have come to realize that there’s more to life than achieving and being successful. They are realigning their lives as well. It is exciting times for all of us who are stepping out of our comfort zones and daring to do what we love.

Women over 50 and boomers in general are taking the opportunity that better health and longevity have supplied and writing a new chapter in their lives. They’re starting businesses, traveling, giving back to the world in whatever way their essential selves are calling them to do.  Jan, at 50, started a home care business in Knoxville, TN. She saw a need and decided to fill it. Mary sold everything she owned and moved to a farm where she is living a simpler, more fulfilling life. I left our family business and began to write full-time. The sky is the limit for anyone who is willing to take a risk and follow their dreams.

I will be starting a new page on my blog highlighting women over 50 who have taken a risk and started down the path to their true destiny. I hope that you will find them as inspirational as I do. If you belong on the list, let me know! There is plenty of room for more!
